RESPECT THE ORANGE PILL

Smart Style is all about making sure everyone has a fun and safe terrain park experience. PRIOR to using Freestyle Terrain, you are responsible for familiarizing yourself with Freestyle Terrain and obeying all instructions, warnings and signs. Freestyle skills require maintaining control on the ground, and in the air.

Make sure you know your limits and ride features that you are comfortable with. Start small and work your way up!

Take a terrain park lesson from one of our snowboard instructors who specialize in parks. Taking a lesson with them is one of the quickest and safest ways to build your confidence while getting familiar with the terrain and proper etiquette.

The National Ski Areas Association and Burton Snowboards have developed the "Smart Style" Freestyle Terrain Safety initiative, a cooperative effort to continue the proper use and progression of freestyle terrain at mountain resorts, while also delivering a unified message that is clear, concise, and effective. The goal of Smart Style is to educate riders about freestyle terrain safety. The orange oval is the symbol used to designate freestyle terrain and is usually posted at the top of the terrain park.

Four main points of Smart Style

  • MAKE A PLAN
o Every time you use Freestyle Terrain, make a plan for each feature you want to use.
o Your speed, approach and takeoff will directly affect your maneuver and landing.
  • LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP
o Before getting into freestyle terrain observe all signage and warnings
o Scope around the jumps first not over them
o Use your first run as a warm up run and to familiarize yourself with the terrain
o Be aware that the features change constantly due to weather, usage, grooming and time of day
o Do not jump blindly and use a spotter when necessary
  • EASY STYLE IT
o Know your limits and ski/ride within your ability level
o Look for small progression parks or features to begin with and work your way up
o Freestyle skills require maintaining control on the ground and in the air
o Do not attempt any features unless you have sufficient ability and experience to do so safely
o Inverted aerials increase your risk of injury and are not recommended
  • RESPECT GETS RESPECT
o Respect the terrain and others
o One person on a feature at a time
o Wait your turn and call your start
o Always clear the landing area quickly
o Respect all signs and stay off closed terrain and feature

Be sure you Know the Code: Your Responsibility Code provides safety tips while on the slopes. Smart Style is a terrain park specific safety program that you should check out before using terrain parks.
